I think that kind of strategy (using the time- and space-extended nature of things) will solve many problems, and allowing other modalities will solve many other. It's then just a matter of us being more careful about what we claim are affordances. The exploding box remains a weird situation that requires the Evil Philosopher to produce the otherwise highly unlikely equivalent configuration.<br /><br />So, to summarise that: many more things than you think can be visually specified; many of those that can't can be specified using other modalities; and those that fail that are either irrelevant thought experiments or things the organism will not be able to perceptually distinguish. <br /><br />Net result: even if what typically constitutes an affordance is under the surface, perception has many avenues to access information about those properties, and if all those fail then it just doesn't notice the difference.
